Cyclones shock eighth ranked Hawkeyes
September 9, 2005
The Iowa State Cyclones have recaptured the Cy-Hawk Trophy.
The Cyclones’ 23-3 victory over No. 8 Iowa is their sixth in the last eight series games.
Iowa State’s Bret Meyer was 14 of 24 passing for 154 yards and a touchdown. He threw one interception.
Stevie Hicks came up big for the Cyclones, salting away the game late, powering threw a tired Hawkeye defense. Hicks carried the ball 28 times for 118 yards – 79 of which came in the second half.
The teams traded turnovers early before Iowa State drew first blood on a 12-yard touchdown reception by Austin Flynn.
That would be all the Cyclones needed.
The Iowa offense failed to ever get into a rhythm, thanks in part to the second-quarter departure of highly touted quarterback Drew Tate.
Tate suffered a concussion and never returned to the field.
Yelk added a 29-yard field goal in the second to make the score 9-0, and LaMarcus Hicks returned an interception for a touchdown 61 seconds later.
“Great team defense, just a tremendous job by John and his staff and the defensive players,” said ISU coach Dan McCarney.
ISU went into the half with a surprising 16-0 lead, but Iowa came out determined to make a run in the second half.
After Iowa State failed to move the ball on the first drive of the half, Iowa drove to the ISU 27-yard line and Kyle Schlicher converted a 44-yard field goal to cut the lead to 16-3.
Hicks’ running, however, melted the clock and the Hawkeyes never got a good drive going again until midway through the fourth-quarter.
ISU safety Nik Moser came up with a crucial strip of Scott Chandle at the ISU 20-yard line, and that would be it for the Hawkeyes.
The Cyclones drove the length of the field, capped with a Ryan Kock 2-yard touchdown run, putting the score at 23-3 and ending any suspense on who would win.
“We bent but we never broke,” Moser said. “It was one of the better games we’ve played.”
