Student facing charges granted leave

After an ISU student entered a plea of guilty two weeks ago for forgery charges he was given permission to leave the state.

Mazen Abdelbasir, freshman in pre-architecture, was arrested June 3 after Younkers loss-prevention officers discovered the theft of a credit card and more than $5,000 in purchases at the department store’s North Grand Mall location.

Court documents show Abdelbasir used a stolen credit card to make purchases in the amount of $5,294.01 at Younkers between May 25 and June 3.

Abdelbasir, who was an employee at the store, faces one count of forgery, a Class D felony; he entered a guilty plea Aug. 8 and is scheduled to appear for a sentence hearing Sept. 12.

For his guilty plea, the state recommended a five year prison sentence and $750 in fines.

Abdelbasir is currently on pretrial release, a condition that does not allow him to leave the state. On Wednesday, District Court Judge Timothy Finn granted Abdelbasir’s request to travel out of the state in order to assist his parents as they move to Arizona.

Under the order, he must provide the Department of Correctional Services with a telephone number where he can be reached and contact his attorney weekly.
