Question of the Week
August 25, 2005
“He served his time; everyone deserves a second chance. I like to compare his situation to that young man who got expelled from Iowa State last year for pushing the Dumpster down Lincoln Way during the Veishea riots. He didn’t get another chance, and now will never be able to return. It seems like they give those in athletics – specifically football players (you might be able to even call them celebrities at Iowa State) – favors when it comes to things that deal with getting in trouble with the law, etc. But what do I know? I’m just another ID number at Iowa State.Œ

“I have mixed feelings concerning the Jason Berryman situation. He did serve his time, so perhaps he has learned his lesson. But I feel Dan McCarney is a guy with really good judgment, so I¡m sure he was cautious when making the decision to allow Berryman back onto the team. With McCarney’s guidance, overall I think that he is deserving of a second chance.”

“Cyclone fans are getting mixed messages on the motive to let him back on the team. Coach McCarney needs to assure the public that he has a program with players who represent the university well, as we always have. If Berryman is able to perform off the field according to these standards, than there’s no reason he can’t have a second chance. If he continues to act like an idiot, then it¡s bad for the face of Cyclone football and Cyclone sports.”
