Former co-director shares highs and lows of position

Eric Hutchison is filling the shoes of the former M-Shop co-director, Squire Boone. Before Boone finishes up a degree in mortuary science and heads to Fairbanks, Alaska, he recalls the highlights from his four years at the M-Shop.

Unforgettable M-Shop Act “One of the best shows I saw was Har Mar Superstar,” Boone says. “He just put on a hilarious live show.”

What Were We Thinking? Two words: Jordan Knight. “God, I don’t want to ever do that again,” Boone says. “The guy can’t even sing in tune.”

There Seems to be a Theme Here The Get Up Kids top Boone’s list of acts he always wanted to see grace the stage of the M-Shop. “That was always one band we chased after but never got. Scheduling conflicts and canceled dates seemed to continuously interfere,” he says. By the time the M-Shop was actually starting to get dates that would work, The Get Up Kids’ fame made them even more elusive.

It’s in the Contracts When Glen Phillips, former frontman of Toad the Wet Sprocket, came through the M-Shop with Nickel Creek in 2001, very specific requests were made, Boone says. What did he want? “Pictures of naked people on the walls,” he says. Phillips also wanted a stretch limo to pick him up at the airport. “It was all joking, but ridiculous.”

Hopes & Visions Boone has one main goal for the M-Shop: “I just hope it stays open for years to come,” he says. “With the university, you never know what’s going to happen next.”
