The search for Iowa State’s new dean of students is set to start in September.

Pete Englin left the position this summer to start as the director of the Department of Residence, and Sharon McGuire began filling in as interim dean July 1.

The upcoming search was announced this summer after Englin took over the Department of Residence.

“A listing for the position will be made in several educational publications starting Sept. 2,” said Todd Holcomb, associate vice president for student affairs. “Oct. 14 will be the deadline for the applicants and we hope to hold open forums early in November.”

He said the search committee is now considering a Jan. 1 start date, with a decision to be made late this year.

McGuire has expressed interest in the position.

“I am definitely enjoying the job thus far and would love to continue,” she said.

McGuire laid out several characteristics a candidate should have.

“A successful candidate needs to balance their focus between students and their experiences and the organizational structure of the university,” she said. “We need a person that can bring the university’s organizations and the students together for the good of both of them.”

McGuire’s previous position was at the Academic Success Center, and as an adviser to the Government of the Student Body. She also has experience teaching courses in women’s studies, multicultural relations and inequality.

McGuire said even if she was not chosen, she would stay at the university.
