PrISUm slows down, nears end of Challenge

ISU solar car team PrISUm has traveled approximately 2,260 miles in Fusion, the student-built solar car, since the North American Solar Challenge 2005 began July 17.

Twenty university teams started the race from Austin, Texas to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and PrISUm was in 11th place overall Monday, according to the North American Solar Challenge Web site.

“We’re not doing quite as well as we hoped. We don’t have as much power as other teams out there,” said Justin Steinlage, the team’s project director and senior in mechanical engineering. “They have got their stuff together a little bit better, and there’s no way for us to keep up.”

The team experienced cloudy weather Monday, which kept them from speeding up.

Steinlange said Fusion was running OK, although it did have some minor electrical problems. He said the problems are common, but other teams experienced them mainly before the race started. In an interview before arriving at their final stop for the day, Steinlange said the team will arrive in Medicine Hat, Canada on Monday evening.

Two drivers switch off every day as the team makes at least one stop per day throughout the country.

The teams crossed into Canada on Sunday.
