ISU president Gregory Geoffroy was named to the NCAA Division I Board of Directors Tuesday as the representative of the Big 12 Conference.

“I’m honored to represent the Big 12, one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences,” Geoffroy said. “Athletic programs are an important part of universities like Iowa State, and this is an important responsibility to work with other conference representatives in providing governance for the NCAA.”

Geoffroy is replacing Bob Hemenway, chancellor of the University of Kansas. Hemenway’s latest term had expired and he had reached the maximum number of terms.

Hemenway was not available for comment.

“He did a great job,” Geoffroy said.

Geoffroy said the Big 12 commissioner asked him if he would represent the Big 12 on the Board and he accepted.

“President Geoffroy will be an outstanding representative for the Big 12 Conference,” said Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg in a statement. “He has played an increasingly important role within the Big 12 Conference Board of Directors on matters related to national policy and governance. I look forward to working with him on this important assignment.”

Geoffroy is one of 18 members on the Board, which has a representative from each major conference in Division I-A, as well as members from I-AA.

The Board of Directors is responsible for establishing the budget, general policies and strategic plan for the organization. Geoffroy said they are the governing board of Division I-A and they have the responsibility of holding the final approval over all NCAA legislation.

Geoffroy’s term will last four years.
