ISU women’s golfers Lisa Meshke and Jessica Shin have been awarded for outstanding performance in and out of the classroom this week. The National Golf Coaches Association have named both players to their All-America Scholar Athlete Team.
“I found out last week; it’s a nice honor,” Meshke said.
In order to qualify for the award, the athlete must have had a 3.5 GPA and have competed in at least 66 percent of the team’s competitive rounds during the season.
“Actually, I played in all the major competitions,” Meshke said.
Meshke was second on the team last season with a 76.97 stroke average, and earned four top-10 finishes, including a win at the Lady Razorback Invitational in October, as well as third, sixth and eighth place finishes in other tournaments.
“From here, I am looking to be a lifelong amateur. I don’t plan to go pro,” she said.
Meshke added she was going to play in next week’s Iowa State Am, an amateur tournament held by the Iowa Woman’s Golf Association at the Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes.
“It’s one of the bigger women’s golf tournaments in Iowa,” she said.
The tournament will start Monday and run through Wednesday and feature 18 holes of golf each day.
Shin was fifth on the team in stroke average as a true freshman last season, averaging 81.1 strokes per round.
She and head golf coach Christen Hermes could not be reached for comment.
