Another ISU head coach is being inducted into the Iowa City High School Hall of Fame. Head football coach Dan McCarney will join head tennis coach Michele Conlon, who was inducted in 2003.

“I am extremely honored and humbled to be inducted into the City High Hall of Fame,” McCarney said. I had a fantastic experience during my career as a student-athlete at City High, and the teachers, coaches and administrators had a real impact on my life. I have always been proud of my Iowa roots and the memories I will always cherish.Œ

McCarney said he received a letter in the mail last week telling him he would be one of seven City High alumni who will be inducted at a banquet in October.

“It was the first time I even knew I was nominated,” McCarney said.

Anne Croker, principal¡s secretary at City High, said that reaction is typical. She said they usually will only find out if whoever nominated them tells them.

Croker also said the inductee does not necessarily even have to be nominated the year they are inducted. She said nominations come in all the time and they are put into a pile, and the committee who chooses the inductees will decide when to induct someone from the pile. McCarney¡s name could have been in the pile for a couple of years, she said.

The committee is made up of five or six teachers, alumni and the school principal. When they look over the nominations, Croker said, the committee looks for several different things, including what they do for their community and what they did when they attended City High.

With this year¡s class of inductees, Croker said there are 149 people enshrined in the City High Hall of Fame, which was started in the fall of 1979.

While at Iowa City High School, McCarney lettered in football, wrestling and track. As a member of the varsity football team his senior year, he helped lead the Little Hawks to the 1971 conference football championship and earned all-state honors.

“I loved my years at City High,” McCarney said. “I took a lot more from City High in my years there than I gave back.”

McCarney then went to the University of Iowa where he lettered three times with the Hawkeyes. McCarney captained the 1974 squad and went to join the Atlanta Falcons and the Denver Broncos in the NFL before returning to Iowa as an assistant coach for 13 seasons. McCarney then served as the defensive coordinator for five seasons at Wisconsin before taking over as head coach at Iowa State in 1995.

McCarney said he was extremely proud with how the Little Hawk football team turned their program around his senior season. He said he was glad he got to be a part of that since he would help Iowa, Wisconsin and Iowa State all turn their football programs around when he coached there.

The induction banquet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 13 in the school cafeteria, while the inductees will be honored the following night at a Little Hawk football game.

McCarney said he would try to make it to the induction banquet, but he would not be able to make it to the football game.

“I won¡t be able to make it back for the game, but I will do everything I can to make it to the banquet,” he said.
