Clothing the order of business on Main Street
July 18, 2005
Long-time owners of a clothing store in downtown Ames are soon turning it over to a new owner.
Durlam and Durlam Men’s & Women’s Clothing, 226 Main St., has been a family business for 41 years, with current owners Joyce and Dave Durlam operating it for the last 21 years.
The couple sold the store to Scott Moorman after deciding to relocate to North Carolina to be closer to their family.
“We didn’t want to leave an empty building on Main Street,” Dave said.
Moorman is scheduled to take over the store on Sept. 1. He plans to keep the same type of store, but add new clothing lines.
“The store will still sell quality men’s and women’s clothing, but we will be adding brands like Polo and Lacoste,” Moorman said. “We would also like to add to the interview suit lines and women’s clothing lines.”
He said the change would not be a major deviation from Durlam’s business plan.
“It won’t be a huge, drastic change, because Durlam & Durlam have a nice ongoing business, but we will update it more,” Moorman said.
The store’s name will change to Moorman Clothiers. They plan to do some renovations right away, but the store will not be closing for them. Moorman also plans to keep many of the current employees.
