Teenager drowns at Peterson Pits

A 17-year-old drowned while swimming Sunday in Peterson Pits, a lake four miles north of Ames.

A call was placed into 911 at 6:20 p.m., said Capt. Gary Foster of Ames police. The Gilbert Fire Department, Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue Team and paramedics from Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames responded to the call.

Foster said the unidentified teenager was swimming with a group of friends near a buoy when he went underwater. The boy surfaced once, went under again, and then didn’t resurface, he said. Foster said apparently the boy’s leg got caught. Foster couldn’t confirm specifically how the boy was trapped.

Foster said the last time a drowning happened at Peterson Pits was five years ago, but said he doesn’t believe this is a trend.
