With little radio airplay or mainstream publicity, the members of San Francisco Bay-area punk band Tsunami Bomb have carved a name for themselves through almost non-stop national touring and a reputation for playing intense, engaging shows.
Female lead singer Agent M sets Tsunami Bomb apart from other punk bands in a genre where frontwomen are somewhat rare. Her energetic vocals drive the fast, hard-hitting punk rock that has taken Tsunami Bomb from an obscure local band to one gaining national recognition.
Tsunami Bomb was just another Bay-area punk band without a record deal.
That changed when AFI bass player Hunter Bergan showed up at one of the band’s shows in 1999.
“He’s from somewhat the same area that we are, and he came to one of our shows one night, kind of randomly, and really liked the band,” Agent M says.
“He actually approached us and asked if we wanted to release a seven-inch on his label. Of course we said yes, because we had no other releases at the time.”
The band’s sound has evolved over time, with the main difference being the absence of a keyboard player.
“The lineup changes have been the major changes in sound,” Agent M says.
The band’s summer tour recently encountered some trouble when the band was turned away from the Canadian border and was forced to cancel five tour dates.
“It’s what everybody assumes it would be,” Agent M says.
“We had some band members that had some minor criminal past and some crew that had some as well — Canada didn’t want us.”
Their second full-length album “The Definitive Act” came out last fall. After this summer’s touring is over, the band plans to begin working in earnest on a new album.
The band will also be releasing a live DVD soon.
After its show at House of Bricks, Tsunami Bomb is playing two more dates in the Midwest before joining the Vans Warped Tour.
“We’d love to do the entire tour, but we were only offered the first two weeks,” Agent M says.
Tsunami Bomb will perform with The Loved Ones, Kane Hodder and Crowned King on Wednesday night at the House of Bricks.
