Berryman has not registered for classes

As of Monday, the Office of the Registrar does not have former Cyclone defensive lineman Jason Berryman registered for the new summer term nor has he registered for the fall semester.

Tom Kroeschell, director of ISU Media Relations, said the Registrar would be the final word on Berryman’s enrollment.

“If he’s not enrolled, then he’s not enrolled,” he said.

Kroeschell also said if Berryman wasn’t registered for this summer term, then he would not be on the team in the fall.

“You can’t be eligible to play unless you are in school,” Kroeschell said.

Kroeschell declined to comment further.

Head football coach Dan McCarney could not be reached for comment.

Berryman was a true freshman as a defensive end and earned team Most Valuable Player honors after his first season as a Cyclone.

He was then arrested Aug. 4, 2004, and charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and two counts of first-degree theft. He had been accused of stealing $4 from Jeffrey Kemble, senior in health and human performance, and punching him in the face.

He was also accused of stealing a cell phone from Thomas Peters, senior in mechanical engineering.

Berryman pleaded guilty to lesser charges of serious misdemeanor assault and first-degree theft and received a 300-day jail sentence, $1,500 in fines and two years of probation.

Berryman’s sentence was reduced by 42 days for good behavior, allowing for his early release after 258 days in jail.

Shortly after his release, McCarney and Berryman met to discuss his future. McCarney declined to comment on those meetings, however, but said in an Associated Press article his decision would be a lengthy process.

McCarney’s decision was expected this week, but there is no word yet.
