Police find homemade bomb

A possible incendiary device was discovered by Ames Police and Fire Departments on Sunday night.

Ames Police Cmdr. Randy Kessel said police cordoned off the area around 145 Marshall Ave. after receiving the call at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

“What the officers found, it was suspicious material of what appeared to be a homemade incendiary device that was concealed in another container,” Kessel said.

He said what appeared to be fuses were sticking out of the container, which led police to believe it could be dangerous.

Kessel said the device could not be immediately identified or diffused, so the state fire marshall transported the device to its Des Moines headquarters to be analyzed.

He said police have no suspects.

“It certainly would be a possibility that there would be more information found on this case,” Kessel said.

He said incidents like this do not happen often.

“This last week we had those two incidents, it just seems like an anomaly,” Kessel said, referring to two calls about dangerous substances made last Tuesday.

People often do not report homemade incendiary devices, he said.

“It’s always better to call if you’re unsure,” Kessel said.
