Fighters go postal in the post office

A fight last weekend in the post office on Welch Avenue ended in the arrest of three Ames men after one pulled out a knife.

The fight began around 2:30 a.m. at the U.S. Government Welch Avenue Station, 210 Welch Ave.

Ames Police Sgt. Brian Braymen said the dispute began over the three men’s comments toward a woman. A second group of men subsequently got involved.

“A verbal argument had started over comments to the female, and a fight ensued,” Braymen said.

Braymen said a knife found at the scene could have belonged to one of the three men, all of whom were arrested.

“It was taken from the individual before it was used,” he said.

There were no serious injuries, Braymen said.

Jeffrey Allen Brooks, 21, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Thomas Michael O’Brien, 23, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, both simple misdemeanors. Joseph John Jensen, 23, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

The conflict was not a “mutual combat,” which is why only one group was arrested, Braymen said.

“A lot of the fights we have are a sort of mutual combat, if it’s not and we can actually apply blame to someone, we arrest them,” Braymen said.
