Archibald excited to be associate head coach
June 27, 2005
Damon Archibald, assistant men’s basketball coach, has been promoted to the position of associate head coach, Wayne Morgan, head coach, announced June 20.
“I’m extremely flattered that Coach Morgan has put this title on me,” Archibald said.
“It was a great Father’s Day gift.”

Morgan said Archibald was very deserving of such a promotion.
“He has shown great ability in every aspect of the program,” Morgan said. “He’s done a lot of things to help us.”
Archibald said there really isn’t any difference between the two positions.
“It doesn’t feel any different,” he said. “Internally, there isn’t a difference in the job, but externally, it’s more prestigious.”
Still, Archibald said people can view him as the top assistant coach for the men’s basketball team now.
Morgan agreed, but said Archibald will take on a few more administrative responsibilities.
The promotion is not laced with a new contract, however.
Archibald said assistant coaches receive salary, but they do not get contracts. He would not comment further on the subject.
With the coming of the new title, Archibald said he has no plans to leave Iowa State any time soon.
“I think some institutions would be more inclined to hire an associate head coach rather than an assistant head coach,” he said.
“I have no plans on leaving, though.”
“I love it here; my wife loves it here; my kids love it here. We live in the best neighborhood. We have the best neighbors . . . and we both agree the best decision we made is where we chose to live.”
