Associate deans chosen for new college

In addition to the formation of the College of Human Sciences and the selection of its new dean, three associate deans have also been chosen.
The positions are scheduled to become effective July 1 when the merger of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Education is made official.
The three new associate deans are JaneAnn Stout, Roger Smith and Daniel Russell. All three have significant experience at Iowa State.
Stout has spent 30 years at Iowa State; since 1990 she has been the associate dean for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and director of ISU extension. Stout’s title will remain the same — associate dean for the College of Human Sciences and director of ISU extension.
“I am really pleased to continue work and continue to broaden outreach possibilities of college extension,” she said.
Smith was named associate dean for undergraduate programs and student services for the College of Human Sciences.
He has been with Iowa State for the last 28 years and holds the position of associate dean for education administration.
Smith said he was very pleased to be named an associate dean in the new college and looks forward to assisting the new dean, Cheryl Achterberg of Penn. State University.
He said his primary goal with the new position is to support the departments and units in the college to provide resources and assistance to students.
Russell will oversee graduate programs for the College of Human Sciences as the associate dean for research and graduate education. Russell has been a faculty member at Iowa State since 1992. Russell could not be reached for comment.
Both Stout and Smith said they see positives with the merger of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Education. Stout said her position in the upcoming year is an opportunity to provide input in the transition.
“It brings together two groups of outstanding faculty,” Smith said.
