Inconsistent play devastates men’s golf at Big 12 tourney
May 1, 2005
It was a roller-coaster weekend for the ISU men’s golf team as it tangled with an old foe at the Big 12 Championships.
Iowa State shot an opening round 302, good enough for fifth place, but came unraveled during the second round and shot a 318 that dropped it to 11th.
The Jekyll-and-Hyde feel of the team continued Sunday as the team rebounded to shoot a 301 and climb back up to ninth.
“Obviously, I was disappointed with where we finished,” said ISU coach Jay Horton. “I was pleased with first round, but the second round was awful. We had the wind and the rain, and the pins were tough.
“We didn’t go sky-high like we did in California, but we were still pretty high, and you just can’t do that against this caliber field.”
ISU freshmen Chris Baker and Joe Cermak finished one-two for the Cyclones but ended their tournaments going opposite directions.
Baker shot a first-round 78, but by the time the final round rolled around, he shot a 5-under-par 67, which not only tied him for the lowest round of the tournament, but was his lowest round as a Cyclone.
“During the first round, I struggled,” Baker said. “The first nine [of the second round] was just brutal. It was rainy and colder and the wind was out of another direction. It was just one of those days.”
Baker finished in the top 10 in a tie for eighth place with a 220 (78-75-67).
“I just went out and played one hole at a time the last day,” Baker said.
Cermak led the Cyclones after the first day, but an 80 during the second round and a 10 on the par-4 18th hole on the final day sealed his fate and he finished tied for 39th with a 234 (71-80-83).
Defending champion Texas dug itself a big hole during the first round by shooting a 311 that was ultimately too much to overcome.
Oklahoma State won the conference title with an 868 (285-296-287), beating second-place Oklahoma by nine strokes.
Although team play is over for the season, the possibility of regionals still exists for Baker.
Regionals will be held May 19 to 21 in South Bend, Ind.
