Assistant coach leaves team
May 25, 2005
Assistant men’s basketball coach Darryl Sharp resigned Wednesday, citing personal reasons.
“I have decided to move back to Minnesota and spend time with my family,” Sharp said in a release. “I have been struggling with this decision for over two years, and I felt the time is right to go back home.”
“I really enjoyed my experience at Iowa State and have the utmost respect for Coach Morgan. This decision was even more difficult to me because of the great relationship I have with the players and the coaching staff.”
Sharp joined the Cyclone men’s staff in the summer of 2003 after coaching the AAU club Howard Pulley in suburban Minneapolis.
In his two seasons under coach Wayne Morgan, Sharp helped the Cyclones compile a 39-25 record and qualify for the postseason twice — NIT semifinals in 2003 and second round of the NCAA tournament in 2004.
“The basketball family at Iowa State will miss Coach Sharp very much,” Morgan said in the release.
Mike Green, associate media relations director, said the basketball team would begin a search to replace Sharp immediately.
