Men’s head basketball coach Wayne Morgan was released from Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Wednesday after undergoing corrective throat surgery for sleep apnea.
“I am very happy to be home from the hospital and looking forward to getting back to work,” Morgan said in a statement. “I will be working myself progressively back into the job over the next four weeks.”
The American Sleep Apnea Association says there are three types of sleep apnea: Obstructive, central and mixed.
“Obstructive is the most common and in all three, people with untreated apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer,” according to information on its Web site.
According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep apnea is very common and affects more than 12 million Americans. Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency and headaches.
The ISU athletic department would not comment further.
