Rec Services offers hike by light of the full moon
May 16, 2005
Hike by the light of the full moon Sunday at Ledges State Park with the Outdoor Recreation Program at Iowa State.
Jerry Rupert, Recreation Services outdoor rec coordinator, has planned the trip to Ledges — including a barbecue and possibly two hikes. He hopes to have at least six people attend.
“We’ll leave in the evening from here and probably have a hike first and then have the barbecue after that, followed by another hike once the moon’s come up,” he said. “It’s really cool to do an activity at night with the full moon. We try to do a lot of things like that.”
This will be the first time for this trip, but Rupert said they did something like this last year.
“We actually did a full moon canoe trip last year, but it rained so we ended up camping out and then doing the canoe trip the next morning,” he said.
As of right now, only one person has signed up for the event.
“We’d need a few more people before we could go,” said Lisa Hueneke, junior in art and design and one of three trip leaders.
“One of the things we really struggle with is getting the word out there,” said Chad Becker, senior in dietetics and a second leader. “A lot of students don’t realize what we’re offering.”
“We run ads in the Daily, we put up flyers all over campus, and at the beginning of the semester, we come up with a brochure that highlights all of our trips for the year.”
Jianying Zuo, graduate in statistics, is the lone hiker so far. She signed up because she’s never been hiking before, wanted to try something new and thought it would be fun. Zuo also said after graduation the opportunities to do something like this will be rare.
“We usually have a few people sign up for the trip on the last day,” Rupert said. “The summer session hasn’t started yet, and most students have left, so we’ll get some more here next week.”
Rupert isn’t sure what they’ll be cooking at the barbecue, but it won’t be the typical hamburgers and hot dogs.
“We take Dutch ovens and cook all sorts of things like shish kebobs, steaks, and, if we have the choice between having barbecued chicken or a hot dog, we’ll take the chicken,” he said. “We like to think that what we can cook in our kitchen we can cook in the outdoors.”
“Basically, we are going to have a good meal and hike around,” Becker said.
“We’ll probably hike a little bit, then eat, then hike some more. It’s a good time, and you get to meet cool people.”
Recreation Services will continue taking registration forms until Friday with the tentative departure time of 5 p.m. Sunday. Cost for ISU students is $6, faculty and staff $12 and $13 for Ames residents.
