On to Regionals

After finishing 10th overall in the Big 12 Outdoor Championships last weekend and securing No. 26 in the latest NCAA Coaches Association rankings, the regular season for the ISU track and field team has come to a close.

“It’s been good overall,” said Steve Lynn, men’s head coach. “It’s been a long, enjoyable year, and we’re looking forward to the regional meet coming up.”

Women’s head coach Dick Lee didn’t have much to say to summarize his team’s season.

“We had some outstanding individual accomplishments,” Lee said.

For Lynn, it’s been the huge change from the indoor season to the outdoor season that has him defining the season.

“I think the improvement we’ve made from the indoor season or even a month ago has been dramatic,” he said. “How hard the guys have been competing; they’ve really stepped up some things and done well.”

“We’ve had several people make some huge improvements this season; just a good solid year of guys getting better. Chase Madison is one of the top throwers in the country because he’s taken advantage of having [senior discus throwers Jamal Cann and Tony Stewart] around him.”

Lynn mentioned several players who have made improvement, including senior Oliver Koenig.

“It’s his first year and he barely got to compete in the indoors, but he’s come out in the outdoors,” Lynn said.

“Just a real good first year guy that came on the season.”

On the opposite side of the team, Lee feels it has been his women’s overcoming of injuries that has defined their season. One specific person is sophomore Agata Kosuda.

“Agata struggled her first year here with injuries,” Lee said. “With her injuries her freshman season, we didn’t expect her to get back on top as quickly as she has, especially since she redshirted during the indoor season. Agata’s just been jumping great during this outdoor season.”

Lee says Kosuda has been dealing with chronic back problems.

He also says the injuries were the low point in the season for the team.

“Not having our best people available at both the indoor and outdoor championship meets to injury was a real low point,” Lee said.

“We were thin as a team so our accomplishments weren’t as good as we wanted.”

Lynn couldn’t think of any specific points in the season that could be considered a low point, but injuries also came into play in the men’s season.

“Tony Douglas was injured at the start of the outdoor season,” Lynn said.

“We redshirted a couple of kids that would have really helped us this year.”

But both coaches said the Big 12 championships were definitely high points in the season.

Kosuda set a new school record in the triple jump in addition to winning the event — the only Cyclone female to take first in an event — and junior Ada Anderson had a personal best in the 800-meter to take second for the women’s team while Koenig secured a first place finish in the long jump with Douglas coming in third and Cann took second in the discus.

“We had some real positive things happen at the conference meet,” Lynn said.

Next up for the track and field team is the NCAA regional meet which will determine who will go on to nationals. The Cyclones have qualified nine this season, five from the women and four from the men.
