Forum to discuss concerns with demolition

ISU facilities planning and management is scheduled to hold a public meeting Tuesday to provide the Ames community with more information about the demolition of Knapp and Storms Halls.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in 1414 Molecular Biology Building.

The reason for the meeting is to share demolition information with the concerned public, and give the surrounding community a chance to voice any concerns they may have regarding the project, said Kerry Dixon-Fox, project manager in facilities planning and management.

“We want to learn what concerns are coming from property owners and the campus area about the project with plenty of time before the demolition itself, and share what information we know about the project at this point with them,” Dixon-Fox said. “We’re trying to get out as much information as possible.”

A safety zone with a 750-foot radius will be created around the buildings, and includes more than 100 tax-paying property owners and hundreds of Ames residents, she said.

Todd Holcomb, interim director of the Department of Residence, said the meeting is open to the public and said community officials, ISU students, faculty members and project consultants will be in attendance.

The university is in the process of selecting a contractor for the project, which will be determined in May, Dixon-Fox said.

The implosion is scheduled for between July 5 and July 21.

Knapp Hall was closed in December 2003. Storms Hall was closed after the 2003 spring semester.

They had been scheduled for implosion before then.
