Hoping to make a racket

The ISU women’s tennis team is still struggling to prove its compatibility on the court.

After being shut out by Texas A&M and Oklahoma State last weekend, the team has another home court opportunity to record a conference victory. The Cyclones face Kansas State at 4 p.m. Saturday at Forker courts, weather permitting. The backup location for the match is the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.

Injuries have been part of the reason for the team’s lack of success, and the hits keep coming. The team’s top returner from last year, Eve Soriano, is out for the season with a broken ankle, and the former No. 2 player, Caitlin Loprinzi, has been moved down to the No. 4 spot because of a broken arm. This has caused all the players to be moved up a spot.

Coach Michele Conlon said the injuries make the battle harder, but feasible.

The team’s confidence was boosted last weekend by a supportive home audience, which Conlon said she hopes to see again this weekend against the Wildcats.

“If you’re one of 14,000, someone might not know you are there, but in a tennis match, people will know you are there and appreciate it,” Conlon said.

“Our players were responding to that support [last weekend]. They were looking up and pumping their fists and really getting into their matches.”

In an effort to rest the team — mentally and physically — after the weekend, Conlon gave it the day off on Monday. Team members said they didn’t feel the break was necessary and headed for the courts at their normally scheduled time to begin preparing for their next bout.

“I was very inspired by that as a coach,” Conlon beamed.

“When you give players a day off toward the end of the season, and they end up calling you up to tell you they’re going to play anyway.

“It’s indicative of the spirit of this team. They don’t give up — they fight, and they want to get better.”
