Men’s golf blown off course, finishes sixth in tournament
April 5, 2005
High winds and the threat of severe thunderstorms caused problems all day Tuesday in Wichita, Kan., driving frustration levels and scores up at the 12-team Diet Pepsi Shocker Invitational.
Iowa State carded a third-round 306 to bring its total to 926, good for a sixth-place finish. Winds of nearly 30 mph kept scores higher than usual, allowing only three golfers to bring in 18-hole scores under par during the 54-hole event, all on the first 18.
“The wind and our inexperience was a big factor out there,” said ISU coach Jay Horton. “We didn’t play too well today. A couple guys got off to bad starts and weren’t happy with how they played.
“We just have to ask some guys to start playing with confidence.”
ISU freshman Chris Baker returned to his perch on top of the ISU leaderboard with a 226 (76-74-76) and a 12th-place finish. Rodney Hamblin cracked the top-20 with an 18th-place finish, shooting a 231 (77-77-77).
“Chris is used to finishing up there now, but I know he wasn’t very happy with the way he played today,” Horton said. “Rodney got off to a bad start today but he played fairly consistently. We just have to get those scores down there a bit now.”
Corey Schultz rebounded from a slow first day to shoot a 3-over 74 for a total of 235. Drew Dalziel finished with a 238 (79-80-79), and Paul Huddle rounded out the team scoring for the Cyclones with a 239 (78-79-82).
“Corey played a lot better today,” Horton said. “I know he would’ve liked to have a couple shots back, but he played a lot better today.”
Senior Tyler Brady saw his first collegiate action with the Cyclones and competed as an individual, carding a 260 (82-87-91).
Not one player was able to overcome the winds and shoot under par for the tournament.
Medalist honors went to Juan Lizarralde of Oklahoma Christian University after he beat Stephen F. Austin State’s Trevor Sauntry in a playoff after both shot a 1-over-par 214.
Stephen F. Austin St. had the last laugh, winning the tournament with an 887, seven strokes over Oklahoma Christian. Host team Wichita State came in third with a 909, followed by Evansville’s 915.
Oklahoma City University edged out Iowa State by four strokes for the final spot in the top five.
Iowa State has one final chance to prepare for the Big 12 Championships when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Boilermaker Invitational on April 16.
