Last year, the Cyclones dropped two consecutive softball games against Texas A&M, each resulting in a 3-0 score. History repeated itself Saturday afternoon when the ISU softball squad lost to No. 6 Texas A&M 3-0 at College Station.
In the second game, Iowa State decided it wouldn’t leave Texas without a fight, and gave the Aggies a run for their money in an eight-inning 4-2 loss Sunday.
“I thought we competed very well this weekend against a top-10 team in the country,” coach Ruth Crowe said. “I do see some things to build on, but this gives us a good start for next week.”
Texas A&M freshman pitcher Megan Gibson launched a two-run walkoff home run in the extra inning to cap a thrilling victory for the Aggies. Gibson completed her full circle by earning the win on the mound as well, improving her record to 7-1.
Texas A&M bumped its standing to 36-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big 12, and Iowa State slid to 12-21 and a winless 0-8 in the conference.
“I thought they played with a lot of heart,” Crowe said. “Texas A&M is a really good team, and I thought the kids put a lot of really good effort in.”
A triple in the first inning by Texas A&M’s Jamie Hinshaw scored a runner from second, and teammate Jana James then drove Hinshaw home to get the early 2-0 lead.
Iowa State would not be intimidated and rallied by plating a runner in the second and added the tying the run in the fourth. Neither team could grasp a run until Gibson unleashed her 14th homer of the season.
In the first game of the weekend the Aggies again made their presence known in the first inning when they scored two of their three runs quickly off the bat. Iowa State had difficulties with Aggie freshman pitcher Amanda Scarborough, who gave up only one hit on the afternoon: a single to center field by ISU senior Diana Reuter.
Scarborough notched six Cyclone strikeouts in her win on the mound, her 21st of the season. ISU pitcher Alyssa Ransom suffered the loss, giving up one earned run and four hits to drop her to a 6-12 mark. The Cyclones committed four errors in the contest.
The Aggies lead Iowa State in the overall series 23-4.
