Legislators, residents to interact at forum
April 1, 2005
Story County residents have the opportunity to meet with state legislators, ask questions and voice their concerns this weekend.
A legislative “wake-up” forum is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the City Council chambers at Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.
The forum is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and the American Association of University Women.
Although the sponsors of the event are all women’s organizations, the forum will be focusing on generalized issues rather than just on women’s issues.
“Anybody can ask any question they want,” said Jeri Prescott, publicity chairwoman for the forum. “Sometimes we zero in on a specific topic for a forum, but this year it is general.”
All legislators who have a part of Story County in their district were invited to attend the forum. Sen. Herman Quirmbach, D-Ames, Rep. Lisa Heddens, D-Ames, Rep. Jim Kurtenbach, R-Nevada and Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, D-Ames, are expected to be at the event.
Sen. Stewart Iverson, R-Dows, was originally scheduled to be there but cannot attend because of a schedule conflict.
Each legislator has been asked to talk about what he or she has been doing in the last month before answering questions from the audience.
Anyone who would like to attend the forum is invited to come.
The event will be broadcast on local access cable television, and those who are unable to attend can call in with their questions.
“It’s a real give and take,” said Tom Jackson, legislative action chair for the League of Women Voters.
“The main thing is the interaction between legislators and their constituents.”
