McCarney and Berryman meet to talk about return
April 21, 2005
ISU football coach Dan McCarney recently met with Jason Berryman for the first in a series of interviews discussing the likelihood of Berryman’s return to Cyclone football.
McCarney did not return calls to comment on their meeting.
“They’ve met once, and will meet again prior to Berryman’s leaving for Houston,” said Tom Kroeschell, ISU athletic department spokesman.
“No decision of any kind will come out of those meetings … There will be no major move in the near future.”
Berryman, former ISU defensive end and the 2003 most valuable player for the football team, was released from the Story County Jail on Monday.
He served 258 days of a 300-day sentence for first-degree theft, a felony, and assault causing injury, a misdemeanor.
McCarney said in an Associated Press article reaching a decision regarding Berryman’s rejoining the ISU football team will be a lengthy process, and indicated there are many factors that need to be settled first, including Berryman’s student status at the university.
Pete Englin, dean of students, declined to comment on Berryman’s specific circumstance with re-enrolling at Iowa State, but described the process a hypothetical student with a felony record would need to follow in order to gain readmission to Iowa State.
“Any student that wants to return to Iowa State that has been away from the university for less than a year can request re-entry through the [Office of the] Registrar,” Englin said.
“In a situation that we are aware of past [criminal] incidents, our interest would be in determining if the student poses any risk to the rest of the community.
“I can’t comment on Jason’s specific circumstance … This would be true even for prospective students applying to the university.”
ISU President Gregory Geoffroy’s office declined to comment on the likelihood of Berryman’s readmission to the university.
Lane Danielsen, former ISU football player, played with Berryman during his first year with the team and commented on Berryman’s work ethic and the possibility of him rejoining the Cyclones in the future.
“He’s a heck of a player; he always worked hard and if he plays for Iowa State again he will really help out the team,” Danielson said. “I’m sure coach McCarney will consider all the options and make the best decision for Iowa State and Iowa State football.”
