Jared Graham highlighted a successful day for the ISU track and field team Saturday, setting a personal record in the 400-meter dash and anchoring a record-setting 4×400 meter relay.

At the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., Graham won the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.72 seconds, beating his previous best of 47.40.

“To be honest, I was feeling fatigued,” Graham said. “It was my first open 400 of the season, but based on how I was doing in other stuff, I was pretty confident.”

The champion 4×400-meter relay team set a meet record (3:10.35) at the Ponoma-Pitzer Invitational, roughly 15 minutes from the Mt. Sac Relays, in Claremont, Calif.

The winning team was Elijah Braimah, Justin Sherman, Abraham Rotich and Graham.

Men’s coach Steve Lynn sent his distance runners to Mt. Sac and the sprinters to the Ponoma-Pitzer Invitational.

“In football, you wouldn’t send your linebackers to one game and running backs to another game, but we sent them to the best place at this part of the season,” Lynn said.

Lynn said despite having knee problems, James Lopes ran well in the 100- (fourth place, season best 10.70) and 200-meter dashes (ninth, 21.66) at the Ponoma-Pitzer.

Kellen Burl took third while running a collegiate-best time of 14.70 in the 100-meter dash and Sherman finished fourth with a season-best 53.24 in the 400-meter hurdles.

“Everybody had a good meet for the sprinters,” Lynn said.

Neil Hines and Tony Stewart also had season bests in the javelin (181 feet, 11 inches) and hammer (185-11), respectively. Hines won his event and Stewart finished in fourth place.

Stewart said he was happy with his last throw and has seen improvement every time he competes.

“One of my goals is to keep improving every meet,” Stewart said. “I threw consistently today, but I didn’t have a whole lot of power for some reason.”

Stewart was less than a foot away from a personal best throw and said he will accomplish that soon.

“Actually, every time I go out I expect to PR,” he said. “I want to beat it at UNI and do it again at Drake.”

The rest of the team was in Columbia, Mo., for the Tom Botts Invitational.

The team was led by Jamal Cann’s first-place finish in the discus (187-4). Freshman Chase Madison beat his personal record with a fourth-place throw of 175-11.

For the women, Rebecca Williams finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (13.97).

Williams said the team had trained hard the entire week and that she was feeling the effects.

“I was really tired during the whole race,” she said. “It was a meet to get a race in. We trained through this week, plus, getting stuck at the airport [in California because of snow in Denver] Monday, I was really exhausted and fatigued.”

Williams said the team will soon start to back off the training and start with technical things.

“I’m still getting back to my speed from last year,” she said. “After I get my speed back, I’ll work more on my technique.”
