After 258 days in jail, Berryman is released
April 18, 2005
At 7 a.m. Monday, Jason Berryman walked out of the Story County Jail for the first time in nearly a year.
The former ISU defensive lineman was released from jail early Monday morning, stepping out from behind bars after 258 days in jail.
Berryman was arrested Aug. 4, 2004, and later pleaded guilty to serious misdemeanor assault and first-degree theft.
He was accused of stealing $4 from Jeffrey Kemble, junior in health and human performance, and punching him in the face. He was also accused of stealing a cell phone from Thomas Peters, senior in mechanical engineering.
Berryman’s sentence was reduced by 42 days for good behavior, allowing for his Monday release.
Midway through his time in jail, Berryman sent a letter to District Court Judge William Pattinson, asking for an early release.
“Your honor, you have taught me that the world does not revolve around me, that everyone has to follow the law, that just because I can play sports well, that does not make me an exception to the rules,” Berryman said in the letter.
“You have also taught me that life is to precious to waste it on making dumb choices.”
Pattinson denied his request.
ISU football coach Dan McCarney said he will meet with Berryman, along with all of his other players, for their spring evaluations. McCarney could not be reached for comment, but Tom Kroeschell, athletic department spokesman, made a statement on the coach’s behalf.
“Coach Mac will meet with Jason this week, but no decision of any kind will be forthcoming in the near future,” Kroeschell said.
Calls to Berryman’s lawyer, Joseph Cahill, were not returned. All attempts to contact Berryman and his family were unsuccessful.
