A poor opening round at the Big 12 tournament set the tone for the weekend as the ISU women’s golf team finished dead last in the conference championship.

The final tournament of the season marked the first time the Cyclones finished last as a team.

Iowa State shot an opening- round score of 317 and could not climb out of the basement. The final two rounds of scoring found the Cyclones shooting team scores of 314 and 326 to finish the three-round tournament with a team score of 957.

Iowa State finished 57 shots behind tournament champion Oklahoma State, and two strokes behind 11th-place Colorado. For the championship, the Cowgirls placed four of five girls in the top twenty individually.

Individual tournament champion Annie Thurman-Young from Oklahoma State won with an overall score of 212. Notable for this Big 12 tournament, located in Austin, Texas, was the fact that four of the top six teams are from the state of Texas.

For Iowa State, senior leader Louise Kenney set a strong pace to follow, shooting 77-77-76 to finish with a three-round score of 230. Kenney finished tied for 12th place overall in her final Big 12 tournament.

The rest of the team did not follow her lead, with no one else finishing inside the top 30. Senior Lisa Meshke shot rounds of 80-78-80 and was followed by underclassmen Karly Pinder and Kendra Hanson, with three-round scores of 245 and 248 respectively.

Sophomore Christy Athas, a regular in Iowa State’s lineup, did not play.

Freshman Jess Shin rounded out the scoring for Iowa State, recording rounds of 82-84-87 to finish the tournament with a 253.

Up next for the Cyclones is the NCAA Central Regional in Lubbock, Texas. The regional tournament will take place May 5 to 8.
