Two people were injured Thursday when a car pulling out of a parking lot onto Sheldon Avenue collided with a motorcycle.

The car, a Pontiac Grand Prix SE, was traveling westbound, pulling away from a stop sign in a parking lot on the 200 block of Sheldon Avenue near the College of Design, said Ames Police Cmdr. Randy Kessel.

The motorcycle was traveling northbound on the road when the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the car, Colleen Marie Ewell, 22, Ames, told police she did not see the other vehicle, Kessel said.

Ewell was the only passenger in the vehicle.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle was speeding, he said.

Corey Nelsen, 20, Ames, driver of the motorcycle, and Rachel Elizabeth White, Ames, a passenger on the motorcycle, were transported by ambulance to Mary Greeley Medical Center, Kessel said.

Ames Police officer Alan Lavender said Nelsen, sophomore in landscape architecture, and White, sophomore in biology, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and Ewell, senior in advertising, had no physical injuries but was “shaken up.”

Police blocked traffic on Sheldon Avenue from about 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. until the ambulance left and Ewell’s car was moved.

Lavender said he has seen similar accidents result in death, and he believed Ewell must have stopped quickly in order for the injuries to be minor.

Police were working at the scene of the accident to determine the speed of the motorcycle and document positions of the vehicles.

Lavender said he did not know whether the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were wearing helmets.

Kessel said no traffic citations had been made as of 5 p.m. Thursday.

In an unrelated case, a red Oldsmobile Bravado struck a man who was traveling on a bike Thursday around 9 p.m. at the intersection of Arbor Street and Sheldon Avenue.

More information was not available from the Ames Police on Thursday.
