Advisers help clear up graduation mishaps

Graduation is approaching quickly, and it is important for seniors to double check their requirements so they can successfully graduate.
The Office of the Registrar’s Web site contains a list of frequently asked questions about graduation and commencement to remind students of things they need to think of before they can meet graduation requirements.
Students often forget that all financial aid exit interviews need to be completed and other debt must be taken care of, said Kathy Jones, assistant vice president for records and registration. Jones said she advises graduating students to check the registrar’s Web site for information pertaining to financial obligations because if these items are not taken care of, transcripts and diplomas will not be released.
“Every year, approximately 10 percent of seniors anticipating to graduate are pulled from the list for one reason or another,” said Maureen Deisinger, academic adviser for the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.
Deisinger said the top three reasons journalism students are pulled from the graduation list are because students do not meet the requirement of 45 credits above the 300-level, they neglect to file minor forms or the required internship has not been met.
Other reasons, like not having enough total credits or failure to take care of incomplete grades, can also change anticipated graduation dates, Deisinger said. She said departments work hard to reach out to students to make them aware of graduation requirements.
Advisers said some people, however, choose not to pay attention to e-mail or other warnings.
Ann Coppernoll Farni, program coordinator for the business undergraduate program, said several business students each semester overlook certain graduation requirements and fail to graduate on time.
She said students overlook the requirement of having a ‘C’ or better in at least 30 credits applied to the business core and major.
“Management Information Systems students sometimes fail to meet the 42 credits of 300-level or higher requirement because they do not meet this just by taking the business core classes, unlike the other business majors,” Farni said.
Major requirement problems can be clarified through the departmental adviser.
Final grade checks will be made approximately two weeks after the end of the semester, and diplomas will be mailed to all successful degree candidates, according to the undergraduate application for graduation. If a student fails to meet graduation requirements, their application will be canceled and the student will be required to submit a new one for a future semester.
