Allan claims All-American status

Iowa State’s lone representative at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Championship meet came away with his second career All-American finish during the weekend.

Junior Ryan Allan earned a bronze medal with a third-place finish in the 156-pound weight class.

“Ryan did really well because these guys [at nationals] are really good,” said ISU Boxing Club coach Terry Dowd.

The association championships were held on the campus of the Air Force Academy on Thursday to Saturday. Dowd said Allan did very well in the opening match. Allan had a record of 5-2 going into the championships.

“There were a lot of great boxers there,” Allan said. “The camaraderie among the boxers was very high.”

Allan won his first match by decision, using a jab and his longer wingspan to keep his opponent at bay.

“That kid was good, but Ryan was just better,” Dowd said.

In the semifinal round, Allan lost to Matt Pride of Army. Pride beat Allan by a split-decision. Three judges voted for Pride, and two picked Allan. Dowd said height was the reason why Pride won the tight match.

“Ryan only lost by two points,” Dowd said. “[Pride] was fair, but the only reason he beat Ryan was because he was a lot taller. Ryan should’ve taken it right to him right away, try to wear him out.”

In the championship round, Pride beat Alejandro Loya of Navy. Loya was the fighter who beat Allan last month at the regional meet in Louisville, Ky.

“Ryan could beat them both,” Dowd said. “In the championship fight, Loya made the same mistake as Ryan, by not going after [Pride] right away.”

The military academies had a good weekend at the championships. Navy took the team title with 42 points. Second place went to the Air Force Academy (40 points), and Army – led by Pride – took third place with 29 points.

Allan said he is already getting ready for next year’s national meet, but Dowd might have a different plan for Allan.

“I don’t know what we are going to do yet,” Dowd said. “We might box USA boxing next year instead.”

An exhausted Allan still has the itch to keep boxing this year.

“Next weekend I am going to fight in the Golden Gloves in Des Moines,” Allan said. “I have to lose a few pounds because I’m going to fight in the 152-pound weight class.”
