Fun at festival despite wind
April 24, 2005
The Festival in the Villages brought families out for all-day entertainment Saturday, despite cold winds forcing people back into their winter coats.
Children and parents enjoyed a day planned for family fun and games at Schilletter and University Villages. The event was sponsored by Leaders INspiring Connections, the Student Union Board and the Schilletter University Villages Council.
Natalie Steffen, president of the SUV Council, and Catherine Dekkenga, resident manager of Schilletter Village, put the event together.
“Natalie and I organized and co-chaired the event,” said Dekkenga, senior in philosophy.
The festival had tents with crafts and games set up for children. There was also a miniature golf course, inflatable games like a jumping pit, a Velcro wall and a petting zoo.
ISU Pre-Veterinary Club provided the petting zoo, which included a pig, two lambs, a goat, two cows, a donkey and rabbits. Smaller animals like guinea pigs were available to be held by visitors.
Ice cream from the ISU Dairy Club was available, and entertainment abounded with the ISU Juggling Club, stage shows with music and skits, magic shows, Silly Sally the Clown and Sunny the Clown all on the agenda.
The cold weather was unexpected and unwanted, but everyone seemed to make the most of it.
“The weather affected the turnout, but we still had a great crowd,” Dekkenga said.
“There are people walking around eating ice cream, and it can’t be too cold if they are eating ice cream.”
Even though the weather was not ideal, Steffen, an undeclared graduate student, said parents still appreciated the event.
“Everyone seemed happy to have a day for the kids,” she said.
Volunteers had some problems with some inflatable activities, and the dunk tank had to be filled with Styrofoam and balls instead of water.
“People didn’t want to get wet,” Dekkenga said. “We had four or five inflatables that we couldn’t get blown up.”
Later in the evening, clinics for volleyball, football and soccer were held to teach kids a little about the sports.
The ISU volleyball and football teams ran the clinics. At the end of the evening, the movie “The Incredibles” was shown with popcorn and drinks. Stargazing hosted by the ISU astronomy department, was also scheduled.
