LETTER: What is GSB really good for anyway?

I don’t know if anyone noticed, but the Government of the Student Body elections were earlier this week. It came as no surprise that no one seemed to care.

I took it upon myself to find information about the candidates and the issues they were going to tackle over the next year and found that none of the candidates’ issues differed from their opponents’ proposed issues.

On the Web site, there was an area to submit questions, so I submitted a question asking, “How do we know what each candidate stands for? Do they all think the exact same thing? Are they going to do what they say on the issues?”

I received this response: “Everyone stands for everything in the platform. They each have their own personal interests as well — some are more focused on the recycling aspect, while others want to work harder on improving students’ standing in the city. All will work to accomplish those main goals, though.”

What I got out of this response is that it doesn’t matter if we vote — no matter who is elected, the same things are going to happen. If I don’t agree with some of the things on the “platform,” that’s too bad, because that’s what is going to happen and there’s nothing I can do to prevent it.

I don’t know about you, but this seems to beg the question: Why even have elections? Why should we have a GSB? Let’s just have a dictator who tells us what to do since that’s what we are going to have anyway.
