The ISU softball team went 4-2 during a weekend West Coast swing, capping their trip to the Fresno State Bulldog Classic with a dramatic victory.

Trailing to Ole Miss 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Jessica Quade drove a ball down the left field line for a three-run walk-off home run. The blast gave Iowa State the win, knocking in Kim Rodgers and Lindsey Black.

Fallon Johnson walked to lead off the inning. Black came in to pinch run and immediately moved to second when Rodgers drew another free pass. Ashley Killeen struck out, bringing up Quade, who ended the game with her shot over the outfield wall.

The Cyclones also made a statement in the opening game of the weekend with their first shutout of the season, a 3-0 win over Santa Clara on Thursday.

The Cyclones picked up their second win of the year under the direction of sophomore Ashley Killeen, who drove in Fallon Johnson and Rodgers with a double to left field. She was later plated on a sacrifice fly from Quade. Pitcher Alyssa Ransom picked up the win for Iowa State.

Against No. 23 Fresno State, however, the Cyclones couldn’t keep the momentum and fell 7-0 to the host Bulldogs. Costly ISU errors and timely Fresno State runs sunk Iowa State’s scoring chances. Quade and senior Amber Wood had the Cyclones’ only two hits, and sophomore Katie Reichling took the loss on the mound.

On Friday, the Cyclones faced their second ranked opponent of the weekend and couldn’t overcome No. 4 UCLA’s overwhelming offense.

The defending national champion Bruins, who sport a 13-5 record, ran up the score early in the game to make it 9-0 by the fifth inning. Several scoring opportunities floundered for Iowa State, including hits by Johnson, Rodgers, Diana Reuter and Black.

On Saturday, the Cyclones got back on track, picking up two consecutive wins against St. John’s and Kent State in their third day of play. Though St. John’s tallied the first run of the game, Iowa State rallied immediately in the top of the third with singles from Rodgers and Quade, and Killeen’s first triple of the season. An inning later, Rodgers plated Johnson and Jennifer Bigbee with another triple.

Additional hits by Killeen, Reuter and Cary Akins in the seventh gave the Cyclones insurance runs that would end the game at 7-1. Reichling claimed the win and set her record at 2-3.

Iowa State wasted no time in its final game of the day against Kent State, shooting to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looking back. Misty Kimura had an RBI hit to score Killeen, and Akins added two more RBIs by sending Kimura and Reichling in for the Cyclones. Iowa State captured its second shutout 6-0 and Ransom improved her record to 2-6.
