Golfers finish 10th at tournament

The ISU women’s golf team spent Spring Break in the wild and crazy town of Las Vegas.

Wild and crazy are the exact words to describe the up-and-down nature of the tournament.

“It’s kind of frustrating because I feel like I shoot several good holes in a row and then fall right back into a bad couple of holes,” said senior Lisa Meshke.

Meshke shot rounds of 83-82-76 for a three-round total of 241 that placed her third on the team.

“I’m not playing as well as I would like to right now, but I really feel like these first two tournaments have helped myself and others get a feel for what we can do better,” Meshke said. “I also think that having coach [Christie] Hermes around is really going to bring things together for us all in the tournaments to come.”

Hermes joined the team for the trip to Las Vegas as her first-ever trip with the team as head coach. The Cyclones had previously been under the leadership of assistant and interim head coach Fiona Watson.

Overall, the golfers shot a three-round team score of 946, good for 10th place in the 18-team field. This was only four strokes behind ninth-place Nevada, and first place overall went to Southern California with a team score of 895.

Notable was the play of sophomore Christie Athas. The underclassmen led the team in the opening round with a score of 79, en route to a total score of 237, good for second on the team and tied for 30th place overall.

Senior Louise Kenney was at the forefront for the Cyclone women with a three-round score of 227, which was good enough for 11th place overall in the tournament.
