GSB mulls organizations funding

Definitions, motions and budgetary figures flew through the air as the Government of the Student Body senate wound its way through the tedium of the spring allocations process.

GSB voted 16-15 to send the proposed budget of the ISU Entrepreneur Club back to the Finance Committee, which had recommended zero-funding the club, with instructions to fund.

There was concern whether the entrepreneur organization was a pre-professional group. GSB does not fund those groups, as specified by its bylaws.

“You can somewhat infer that we do not want to fund groups whose focus is primarily to obtain a job,” said GSB off-campus senator Jacob Larson.

Although the GSB Finance Committee unanimously voted to not fund the group for this reason, a majority of the senate felt differently.

Off-campus senator Abby LaCombe said the main focus of student groups should be to gain experience, not jobs.

“I feel like we are beating a dead horse,” GSB Finance Director Kristi Kramer said during the meeting.

After much debate, Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger brought the topic to a vote.

The ISU Men’s Ice Hockey Club was also sent to finance with instructions to finish renegotiation of its contract with GSB before approving its budgets.

Also discussed at the meeting was funding of the ISU Robotics Club. The club, which asked for $10,455, said it would use the money to purchase robotic equipment, including $6,200 for a Sick LMS 200 Series LIDAR, $1,595 for Hero Restoration and $2,660 for workshop equipment.

“These three items are crucial to the club’s survival,” said ISU Robotics Club President Jake Ingman. He added that the $15 per year or $10 per semester dues members pay do not come close to the necessary funds for the club to survive.

The budget was passed 31-1.
