Track and field hosting NCAA last-chance meet
March 4, 2005
ISU track and field athletes have one more chance to qualify for the NCAA indoor championship this weekend at the NCAA qualifying meet in Ames.
Iowa State has two athletes who have achieved provisional qualifying marks for the championship meet: Daniel Kaczmarczyk in the long jump and Ada Anderson in the 800-meter run.
“Ada is probably set,” said women’s coach Dick Lee. “I think she is ready to race, and I think she will probably qualify for the championship meet.”
Kaczmarczyk, a senior competing in his final season at Iowa State, had a 24 foot, 6 1/2 inch jump at the Big 12 championship meet last weekend.
Men’s track coach Steve Lynn said Kaczmarczyk has a good chance to improve his long-jump distance and to qualify for the championship in the triple jump. Lynn also said senior Oliver Koenig has a good chance to qualify alongside Kaczmarczyk in the long jump.
One roadblock for the team has been a rash of illness that has plagued the team so far this year, but Lynn said the team was ready to compete this weekend.
For the women, Anderson achieved her provisional qualifying time of 2:06.54 in the 800 meters at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 12. Sara Boisen, who has competed in the 600-yard race for part of the season, will also be running in the 800-meter run this weekend.
Lee said he does not expect his athletes, other than Anderson, to qualify for the NCAA championships. Most of the team is preparing for the outdoor season, and only a few of the team’s athletes will compete in the qualifying meet this weekend.
“The main reason for this weekend for them is to just go out and have one more race,” he said.
“There could be some surprises though, and surprises are good.”
There should be plenty of talent from other schools, as many schools are sending athletes for a last chance to qualify for the NCAA meet.
Lee said a last-chance qualifying meet is fairly unique to Iowa State. He said Notre Dame and the University of Florida were among the six or so schools that hosted last-chance qualifying events for indoor track and field.
The NCAA indoor track and field championship takes place in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 11 and 12.
