LETTER: Groh/Deal believe in cultural center
March 4, 2005
In many recent letters, there has been concern expressed about student apathy. I agree that many students are unaware of events, opportunities and organizations on campus, but there is one important event that needs to be called to attention. The Black Cultural Center rally occurred Wednesday and was an amazing event to participate in.
For many students who are unaware of the Black Cultural Center, it has been an important place for student interaction at Iowa State. The BCC is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to fostering a sense of community without discrimination. For years, students in the Black Student Alliance and several other groups have struggled to maintain the high quality of services provided by the BCC.
Unfortunately, last year the center closed when pipes froze and burst, causing damage throughout the building. The BCC is campaigning for student support to refurbish the building and reopen the center. These students have worked incredibly hard and deserve the best presidential and vice presidential efforts.
The Groh/Deal campaign had five representatives at the rally and participated in the event, emphasizing the importance of the BCC to ISU students.
Angela Groh and Chris Deal are committed to promoting, supporting and joining important causes like this. Not only have the BCC students worked hard to raise money, they have also brought a very important aspect of diversity to Iowa State.
If we as a student body wish to continue our pride in cultural diversity, we must elect the representatives that will work hard for student interests. We must elect the leaders that will help all students, without prejudice.
It is in every student’s best interest to vote for the two best candidates Monday and Tuesday: Angela Groh and Chris Deal.
