LETTER: Shorter terms ease student involvement

On April 5 there will be a citywide referendum. If you voted in Ames last November in the federal election you can also vote in this election.

The big issues this time won’t be about huge abstract ideologies. They’ll be much closer to home — literally. The big issue on this ballot will be to decide whether City Council terms should be reduced to two years.

I think this is a great idea. What we want to do is make the City Council more responsive to the people of Ames.

Two-year terms would make it easier for students to run for City Council. The City Council has made no effort to hide its hostility toward students. The City Council has shown no concern for the interest of students. Reducing terms to two years would at least send it a message.

So if you like your couches on your lawn, then make sure you vote April 5. Also, there will be satellite voting March 30 at the library. Try and make it to that if you can.
