Women’s golf captains keep breaking records

Records have started to fall in ISU women’s golf, and the team has gotten back on track from where it was at the end of the fall season.

Senior Louise Kenney shot the lowest 54-hole total in Iowa State history, a 2-under par 214, breaking fellow co-captain Lisa Meshke’s previous record of 215. Meshke set that record at the Lady Razorback Invitational on Oct. 18, 2004.

“It’s very important for me; I think everyone wants to have their name in the record books,” Kenney said. “And it’s good for me as a senior; it makes me feel good.

“I know that anybody can break [the record] at any time.”

Meshke matched another record, lowest 18-hole score, with a 69 in her opening round at the Mountain View Collegiate Tournament. That left her in second place after the first day, but she recorded a 78 on the last day and ended with a 218, good for 11th place.

“The conditions were fine; she just had a bad day. Everybody has bad days,” Kenney said.

The team finished in fifth place overall out of 15 teams, a better finish than what it has been shooting so far this spring. The Cyclones have recorded finishes of eighth and 10th place in their only two tournaments of the season.

“The last two tournaments, I haven’t done bad personally. The little ones did well this tournament, and, hopefully, that gives them confidence,” Kenney said, referring to the freshmen.

One freshman, Jessica Shin, recorded the lowest total of her career (229) to finish tied for 48th. Christi Athas and Kendra Hanson rounded out the scoring for Iowa State with 227 and 233, respectively.

Next for the Cyclones is a trip to the Boilermaker Open in West Lafayette, Ind., and the old stomping ground of new coach Christie Hermes.

Hermes was an assistant at Purdue for three years before accepting the head coach position at Iowa State. She led Purdue to the NCAA championship each year she was on staff.
