LETTER: Keg ordinance would widen rift
March 28, 2005
Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes, author of the proposed Story County keg registration ordinance, needs to realize his bill only widens the rift between Ames residents and ISU students. How can a bill whose own author admits it will not solve the problem of underage drinking be beneficial to society when there is the possibility it may cause such a large portion of Ames to feel further disenfranchised? As an attorney, Mr. Holmes ought to know that being in possession of an unregistered keg hardly screams mea culpa. His contrary comment claiming it is proof of an individual’s intent to provide alcohol to minors does little more than suppress students’ attempts at civil disobedience. Such obtuse policies do not seem abnormal for a city that allows its City Hall to refuse 10,000 pennies as a payment for a parking ticket.
Holmes’ bill is specious and frivolous, as it does little to further deter people from providing alcohol to minors than current regulations.
