COLUMN: Groh, Deal’s experience necessary to lead GSB
March 4, 2005
On Monday and Tuesday, the students of Iowa State will make an important decision: they will choose who will represent them throughout the next year. These chosen leaders will be paramount in guiding Iowa State through several major issues that are already looming ahead on the horizon.
Some of the most important issues include working with the city of Ames to establish “one community” while still protecting students’ interests, working with the Iowa Legislature to ensure the passing of the “Partnership for Transformation & Excellence Plan,” which will lock tuition increases in at about 4 percent annually for the next four years and the decision as to the future of Veishea celebrations.
With these matters just around the corner, ISU students need the best individuals leading them through the upcoming year.
These individuals must have experience and plans to deal with these upcoming topics, integrity to represent all ISU students, innovation to think of new ideas, and most importantly, a desire to make Iowa State a better university for everyone.
We, Angela Groh and Chris Deal, believe that we are the best individuals to lead ISU students right now.
Our experience and future plans in handling these issues, unique perspectives from within the Government of the Student Body, innovative programs that we are bringing to Iowa State from all over the nation and willingness to not talk to listen to students instead of just talking to them truly sets us apart from the other slate.
Individually, our experiences have been varied and demonstrate our ability to make things happen.
Angela has been serving as the director of government relations for the past two years. In this time, she started programs such as ISU Ambassadors, Meet the Future of Iowa and Regent’s Day at the Capitol.
Angela has served in leadership roles in more than 15 organizations in her time at Iowa State.
In addition, as a high school student she started a non-profit organization that is now in 10 states.
Chris is serving as the director of academic affairs for GSB. In this position, he has worked with the Faculty Senate and Pick-A-Prof. Chris has also served on the Campus Climate task force.
He has an array of experiences ranging from Freshmen Council President to serving as an honors leader. Chris also has a strong background in parliamentary procedure and an excellent understanding of organizational management and development.
We firmly believe that our fusion of leadership, experience, innovation and integrity will prove to be an effective combination for students.
As a testament to our dedication to students, we have already started working on every aspect of our platform — a platform that came directly from speaking with and listening to ISU students.
From our discussions with ISU students, we have identified five main areas where students feel GSB can better serve them. These areas are academics, student communication with GSB, government relations and tuition increases, student services and the future of Veishea.
Our platform does not focus on how to improve how GSB functions; instead, it focuses on how GSB can better serve students. We have already researched every aspect of our platform and we know we can and will do all we address in our platform.
It is our goal to now take the visions of ISU students and turn them into reality.
We won’t stop there, though. The GSB executive positions must represent Iowa State at all times. In order to do this, we must be available to students so they can bring any concerns they have to us.
We will fully devote ourselves to these positions so that we can serve ISU students to the best of our abilities. We are dedicated to serving all students of Iowa State.
