Backes’ win in final match gives wrestlers 18-15 edge over Tigers
February 14, 2005
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kurt Backes beat Matt Pell in a major decision in the final match, lifting Iowa State’s No. 2-ranked wrestling team to an 18-15 victory over Missouri on Sunday.
Backes, ranked second nationally at 184 pounds, beat Pell 11-2 to avenge an 8-7 loss to the Missouri wrestler last season. Missouri (13-6) held a 15-14 lead going into that match.
Bonus points made the difference for Iowa State (16-1) because each team won five matches. Grant Nakamura had a major decision for the Cyclones at 125 and Nate Gallick did the same at 141.
“Our conditioning really paid off today,” ISU coach Bobby Douglas said. “We wrestled real well. Backes majored a guy he had lost to last season on the opponent’s mat. He gets the game ball today.”
Iowa State also got victories from Trent Paulson at 157 and heavyweight Scott Coleman.
Paulson, ranked fifth, improved to 26-1 with an 8-2 victory over Brad Cieleski. Backes is now 23-2.
In Iowa State’s next dual match, the Cyclones face the No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers, who hold a 17-2-1 record. The Huskers have only lost one Big 12 match this season, a 19-18 defeat against No. 1 Oklahoma State. Their only other loss on the season was a 27-12 trouncing against No. 5 Michigan at the Lonestar duals in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Iowa State has won four out of the last five meetings between the two teams, including a 22-9 victory last year in Ames.
