Katie Robinette and Mary Fox combined for 53 points, and Iowa State cruised to an easy 90-65 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday.

The win improved the Cyclones’ record to 19-4, 9-3 in conference play. It also kept Iowa State in second place in the Big 12, one game behind Baylor, who the Cyclones play on Saturday.

“I think we’ll go into that game more confident than if we hadn’t played tonight,” Robinette said.

Fox smashed her previous career high in points — 22 against Baylor last year — with 28 points, and Robinette came within five points of her record, scoring 25. She also added 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year.

Another bright spot was the play of point guard Lyndsey Medders, who grabbed 13 rebounds and didn’t turn the ball over. The only other game in her career that she hasn’t recorded a single turnover was at Missouri on Feb. 28 of last year. She had two assists in 31 minutes in that game.

“I think Lyndsey Medders is a point guard who does a good job of getting the ball to the person who has the hot hand,” Robinette said. “And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Oklahoma State (7-15, 2-10) was led by Destanie Sykes’ 14 points, a new career high for her. Nina Stone, who had been averaging 15.6 points per game, managed 12. “This game, obviously, you had to win,” said ISU head coach Bill Fennelly. “Somehow, some way, you had to win and we did. We’ll take it and move on.”

Fox ended a shooting slump on Saturday night in Nebraska, when she shot 4 of 9 from the floor and 2 of 5 from 3-point range. On Wednesday night, the Irish dancer threw that slump on the floor and did a jig on it — Fox went 9 of 10 overall and 6 of 6 from 3-point range. She didn’t miss a shot in the first half.

“She just shot lights out,” said Oklahoma State coach Julie Goodenough.

“I thought with two or three of her shots we got hung up on screens and she had some open looks, but some of her shots we were right in her face.”

The game was close for the first 11 minutes of the first half, as the teams kept trading baskets and were knotted at 20 with nine minutes until the break. Then Iowa State took over, outscoring the Cowgirls 29-4, taking a 49-24 lead into the locker room.

Fox scored nine points in the run, while Robinette and Anne O’Neil each added seven.

“It was one of those five-minute spurts that we’ve done to people in this building and people did to us last week in their building,” Fennelly said.

“It turns quickly in this game. [If] you make threes, you guard, you can score in bunches.”

The second half was better for the Cowgirl offense, but Iowa State was just as good as in the first half. The Cyclones held a 33-point advantage with 1:30 left in the game. Both teams scored 41 points in the final half.

The trip to Baylor will be a challenge for the Cyclones, as the road has not been kind to them. They are 13-0 at home, but 5-4 on the road, with three of those losses by more than 20 points.

“I don’t know if there’s anything that sets you up to go to Baylor, but they’re a great team,” Fennelly said. “They’re the number one team in our league.”
