Katie Robinette scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and No. 21 Iowa State overcame stretches of ragged play to beat Texas A&M 68-54 on Saturday.
Lyndsey Medders also had a double-double for Iowa State (21-5, 11-4 Big 12), finishing with 14 points and 10 assists, the last one coming on a pass to Robinette for a layup that topped off the victory with 20 seconds left.
Iowa State is the Big 12’s highest scoring and best shooting team, but the Cyclones didn’t look the part for most of the game, which allowed Texas A&M (14-12, 4-11) to hang around despite shooting 28.8 percent.
The Aggies trailed by only four midway through the second half and were down just 48-43 after Tamea Scales made two free throws with 7:23 remaining.
But Medders hit a 3-pointer and Mary Fox sank two 3s over the next 2« minutes, enabling the Cyclones to finally stretch their lead. Fox’s second 3, on a wide open shot from the left corner with 4:50 remaining, came after A&M had pulled to 55-48.
Medders then sank two free throws and the 6-foot-2 Robinette, taller than any of her defenders, got a basket inside, making it 62-50.
Charlette Castile made a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 20 points, also a career best, to lead A&M. No one else reached double figures for the Aggies, who missed their first eight shots and 20 of the first 23.
Morenike Atunrase, the Aggies’ leading scorer with a 10.7 average, had only six points on 3-for-17 shooting.
Fox, cheered on by about 35 family members who made a 700-mile bus ride from Cleveland, Ohio, finished with 15 points. Anne O’Neil also scored 15 and had six assists.
A 13-1 run gave Iowa State a 20-7 lead, but the Cyclones’ offense stalled after that and they found themselves fending off the Aggies the rest of the way.
