Cyclone gymnasts to compete in showdown against Denver
February 4, 2005
After two weeks of landslide victories, the No. 11 ISU women’s gymnastics team will face No. 12 Denver on Saturday in a showdown where a one-tenth point deduction for a side step or unpointed toe could make the difference between a win or loss.
“We’re ranked one above [Denver] this week, but you can’t rely on that,” said head coach K.J. Kindler. “They are going to be tough, especially tough to beat at home.”
Junior Jessica Oney said the team will continue to be focused solely on its performance.
“Our focus has to be on ourselves, not who we’ve gone or are going against,” Oney said. “Our main focus as a team is still to get a 196 [team total].”
Kindler said starting off the meet with solid routines on uneven bars and stuck landings on vault will be key to the Cyclones’ success.
“It really is going to be dependent on getting off to a good start on uneven bars,” Kindler said. “So far this season, the scores haven’t even been close to our potential. Getting off on the right foot will set us up big.”
Oney said the team’s biggest concern on vault is sticking its landings. By fixing the little things, the team should be able to bring its vault scores up to the level it wants them at, she said.
“As long as we [stick our vault landings] and hit everything else, that will put us in a position to hit that 196 goal,” Oney said.
The vault competition is where the Pioneers will give the Cyclones their biggest challenge. Denver’s Casey Dobyns and Heather Huffaker are ranked fourth and fifth on the event nationally, and will most likely post big scores for the Cyclones to match.
“Heather Huffaker is a very powerful vaulter, and compares to Janet [Anson],” Kindler said.
Anson has won three vault titles this season.
The Cyclones hope to finish the night strong on their best events, floor and balance beam. They have posted big scores on the two events all season, and have won the beam competition at every meet this season, including their loss to No. 6 Alabama.
“I think confidence is definitely on our side,” Kindler said. “Our confidence has proven that we can be consistent and consistency is what wins meet.”
The Cyclones are 5-1 (1-0 Big 12) and take the floor at 7 p.m. at Denver’s Hamilton Gymnasium.
