Slow start continues for softball squad
February 28, 2005
After a shaky start in the ISU softball team’s first weekend of action, the team’s second weekend didn’t go well, either. The Cyclones limped away from the College of Charleston Cougar Classic with a 1-4 showing, for a cumulative 1-7 record.
In the Cyclones’ lone win of the tournament, they avenged a previous loss to Winthrop with a 2-0 win. The teams were at a stalemate until the fifth inning, when Misty Kimura scored on a single by Jennifer Bigbee.
Senior Diana Reuter crossed home on an error after a single by Jessica Quade. Katie Reichling earned the win for Iowa State.
In the squad’s first match Friday, it took on a consistent team from Virginia Tech. Kim Rodgers scored from second, giving Iowa State a 1-0 lead, but the Hokies responded with two runs of their own.
Virginia Tech tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth, pulling away for the 5-1 victory. Rodgers, Quade, Cary Akins and Ashley Killeen all had hits in the loss, including Quade’s first double of the season.
Against Pittsburgh, the Panthers began the first inning with a run which was echoed by an ISU run later that inning. Pittsburgh designated hitter Christa Hunter blasted a home run in the fourth inning, followed by three additional Panther runs in the fifth to secure the 5-1 Panther win.
The Cyclones began their first contest on Saturday with a fiery start against Winthrop, leading the Eagles 3-1 in the fourth. Winthrop rallied in the fourth with three runs, sealing the 4-3 win.
Killeen led Iowa State with two hits in its following game against College of Charleston, but errors by the Cyclones helped the hosts to a 2-1 win.
